5 Brands that Excite Me + Some that Don’t

5 Brands that Excite Me + Some that Don’t

Hey Everyone and Happy Monday!!

I was inspired to create this post after watching my favorite YouTuber, Emily Noel, create a video on this topic. It really got me thinking about not only my favorite products from the brand, but also just how excited I’ve been getting over their new releases.

These aren’t necessarily my very favorite brands of all time, but they’ve definitely had my attention the most lately. Oddly enough, most of the brands in my list are drugstore! I definitely feel like the more affordable brands have really upped the quality of their products over the last few years. I’ve really come to appreciate how great it is to diversify my makeup collection with more affordable items, rather than splurging on one or two high-end products. (Don’t get me wrong, Hourglass, Marc Jacobs, and LM still have my heart!)

This post will be a relatively broad overview of brands/products, but I am happy to do a more thorough review on anything y’all would like to see more of! Just let me know! All products mentioned are linked in each brand description.

I’d like to add that the brands that DO NOT excite me are not inherently “bad” quality or poor in performance. They just disinterest at the moment due to over-production of new products or other various reasons I’ll get into later. This is not intended to bash any one brand or create negativity.

First, I’ll discuss the brands that are MOST EXCITING at the moment and mention the products that I love the most

Revolution Beauty

fIUhAfMvTe+vuAqV6ipprA_thumb_ede.jpg

My GOODNESS has this brand been absolutely blowing me away lately. The quality of the products I’ve tried out from them have been crazy good and they have an ultra-affordable price tag to match. Lately, I feel that they’ve really come out with unique products that grab my attention to want to try out. All the eyeshadow palettes I’ve picked up have provided really interesting color variations that I didn’t have in my collection previously.  You never feel like you’re walking away with a boring, over-produced range of colors.

Most importantly, I think Revolution has been a leader in inclusivity of all ages, skin tones, genders, etc.. They have AMAZING shade ranges for complexion products to meet the needs of their consumers. It just makes my heart happy to find a line of products that can be loved by all.

In my opinion, that’s the real beauty of the beauty industry.

LOOK at the gorgeousness in their Visionary Palette I recently picked up for only $7.00!

The set of colors just inspires me. PERFECTION.

I’ve also recently talked about how good their Fast Base Foundation and Bake and Blot Powders are in previous posts, so I won’t harp on it again. If you missed those reviews, you can find them HERE and HERE. Just shockingly high-performing.

I know I haven’t really scratched the surface of all the different things RB has, but I can’t wait to try more. SERIOUSLY SO, SO GOOD!

Send me your recommendations on what to pick up next!

bareMinerals

iVL0T%8rR0+8DW9tRSs6Lg_thumb_ee7.jpg

This is another brand that has been absolutely killing it with new releases lately. I feel that this brand is definitely WAY underrated. I hope the brand continues to grow and gain the respect it deserves.

BM has consistently prided themselves on creating “clean beauty” products, even before it was trendy. In my mind, this brand really set the standard of what should and shouldn’t be in your cosmetics. I also think they have some of the best price points compared to other high-end brands. I’m also really interested in trying out something from their new skincare line.

I’m making a bold statement with this, but their lipsticks are my absolute favorite among all other high-end/prestige options. Their Gen Nude line of matte liquid and radiant lippies released a few years ago was (and still is) a complete game changer for me. If I’m wearing a liquid lipstick these days, there’s about a 95% chance its a bareMinerals one. I absolutely adore their formulas and they are top-notch in terms of comfort.

Favorite bareMinerals Matte Liquid Lip Shades:

  • Swag

Favorite bareMinerals Radiant Lipstick Shades:

I’ve obsessed over their new Hydrating Foundation Stick in a previous post HERE. It is a dry-skinned person’s dream come true and I love the unique gel-cream consistency it has.

The newest BM discovery for me is their Gen Nude Eyeshadow Palettes . The quality is OUTSTANDING and the shadows are a buttery dream to work with! I also love how compact they are — these would be perfect little palettes to travel with. I have the Gen Nude Eyeshadow Palette in Neutral, and its been such an easy addition for beautiful everyday looks. I highly recommend you check this line out!

SO MUCH LOVE for you, bareMinerals!!

Milani Cosmetics

TeJpBkXGRdyr3Sved+N+JQ_thumb_ee1.jpg

I am absolutely loving SO many things from Milani at the moment! Everything they release is packaged beautifully in their signature gold color. It is truly one of those lines that visually pulls me in and makes me stop and look every time I run across it online or in stores.

Milani is my personal favorite affordable/drugstore brand for lip products and blush! They have SO many new items I have my eye on for purchase soon. They just have so many standout products that I consistently use in my collection and I just love them so freakin’ much.

Of course, my first Milani love is their baked blush in “Luminoso”. I swear this blush is universally stunning on everyone! It just holds a special place in my heart and immediately puts me in a good mood each time I apply it. I also LOVE their blush shade in “Berry Amore” — it’s what berry + bronzy dreams are made of!

I need their entire line of blushes in my life. If this photo doesn’t make your heart flutter, I don’t know what will!

I have so many lip products from Milani that happen to be my very favorites! I’ve tried several different formulations in their line, and they are consistently so GOOD! Their Color Statement Line is fantastic and feels like a nourishing dream to wear. I’ve got the gorgeous shades Blushing Beauty and Plum Rose from this range so far!

I’ve also been a big fan of their Amore Matte Creams, I’ve repurchased the shade “Precious” several times! This is a super comfortable and pigmented cream texture and looks super hydrating on the lips. Their line of Keep It Full Lip Glosses is one of the best gloss formulas I’ve tried to date- the shade  “Luminoso” is stunning. They’ve also got a new Luminoso face palette with blush and highlights I’m dying to try!

Here’s all the lippies I mentioned above swatched:

Next, I plan to try out more of their face products and this eye-shadow palette!

Milani, if you need a new full-time product tester — I’m your girl!!

Wet n Wild

Wet n Wild is definitely a brand that can release some hits and misses. However, it’s really hard for me to complain about the “misses” because this brand is SO AFFORDABLE!

I really respect the fact that Wet n Wild wants all makeup lovers to have access to great products without breaking the bank. They always tend to release products that keep up with current makeup trends for a fraction of the price you’d pay for other brands. No matter what your budget is, they’ve got a great product to try out. I have specifically had a lot of luck with their face products!

A more recent purchase from Wet n Wild is their Photo Focus Primer Water in Cucumber. As a cucumber scent-fanatic, this product is the PERFECT mist to refresh and hydrate my skin. It’s just an instant pick-me-up and I love to use it in several different ways [more on that in a future post! 😉].

RdlRS4ulTAKqSv8jwhs2oQ_thumb_a61

I’ve been SO pleased with the foundations from Wet n Wild, and they so happen to be the most affordable ones on the market! Their Mega Cushion Foundation absolutely blew me away (I’m wearing it as I write this!). The Photo Focus Liquid Foundation could outperform a ton of prestige brands, and costs less than $5.00!

One of my absolute FAVORITE highlights in my entire collection is their Boozy Brunch Reflect Palette. It’s just golden-pink champagne perfection! For some reason, its a little tough to find so if you have the opportunity — pick this one up! I’ve also mentioned HERE how much I love their Brow Highlighter Stick to brighten the lower waterline and the arch of my eyebrow. It is a spot-on dupe for the Benefit High Brow Pencil!!

5lcN90PjTSCXe6ClER7fBw_thumb_d75

Wet n Wild is just such a cool brand and there’s so many new things I’m super curious to pick up. I love the affordability of the products and the fact that they’ve always been dedicated to being Cruelty Free!

*ALSO: I’m in the process of testing one of their newest products that will be posted soon– stay tuned!

ELF Cosmetics

ELF is such an interesting brand to me. They’ve been coming out with cool products that have really intrigued me to want to try out more and more. Once gain, they have some misses in the line, but the hits are amazing ones!

I can remember years ago when ELF was that brand packaged in all black in white that I could only find in a small section at Target. It was crazy to me that pretty much everything cost around $1.00!

My first purchases from the brand were their makeup brushes. To this day, I use ELF brushes daily and they are some of my absolute favorite! Of course, now they have gained more popularity so the prices have gone up a little–but I’m so thankful that this brand puts out affordable makeup tools that work beautifully.

My HG Makeup Brushes from ELF:

ELF has also really stepped up their skincare game, and they have several new masks/serums that I’m dying to dry out! It just really excites me to see affordable brands create skincare that can work for any budget. I really LOVE their Illuminating Setting Spray Mist. It’s so awesome for the price and sets my makeup like a dream.

xS08f0WuRAylhXZWZy2s2A_thumb_efa

I think ELF has the biggest variety of makeup primers to choose from, and they have one that can cater to all different skin types in SO many formulations (sticks, liquids, mists, and of course the infamous putty primer!)

I finally got my hands on the putty one, review coming soon!

rg%AiB9GTFe%zvwy7ZcZgA_thumb_d9f

I also picked up their Instant Lift Eyebrow Pencil, and I absolutely LOVE it. It works great and is just as easy to work with as the ABH Brow Definer for me, and it only costs $2.00 (this is over 10x cheaper than ABH for $23.00!)

As I mentioned, ELF is just one of my favorite brands to watch because they put out great products at such an affordable price. They also tend to run a ton of specials on their website, from % of entire purchases to free shipping! I’m really interested in trying out so many products from their Spring launches, the Beauty Shield Collection (photo below) is really calling to me.

I can’t wait to see what you have up your sleeve next, ELF!    🙂

Now, for the brands that haven’t been holding my attention lately….

  • Tarte
    • I have several products from Tarte that I really love and enjoy. I respect them as a company and I think they’ve definitely made significant contributions to the beauty community. My main disinterest in their line comes from the seemingly constant output of new products that don’t always deliver the quality for the price you pay. There’s been a lot of products that receive so much hype and ultimately don’t work for me. Their most current releases just don’t interest me at the moment, but hopefully they’ll come out with a product I love and want to share!
  •  Urban Decay
    • Once again, I have an enormous amount of respect for UD as a brand and they have some fantastic products. Just personally for me, I don’t love their most recent new releases. I’m not a Game of Thrones fan (don’t hate me!), so I can’t get super excited over their GoT collection. I feel like many of their releases over the last few years just haven’t spoken to me in terms of the color palettes/tones chosen.
  • Kat Von D
    • I’ve never had a ton of products from KVD’s line, but I can say objectively her liquid eyeliner and liquid lips are good products. For personal decisions, I no longer choose to purchase her products or promote them on my site. We have differing ideologies on certain issues, so it is not a brand I can consciously support.

So now its y’all’s turn, please share your most/least exciting brands at the moment! If you feel like creating a whole post, tag me in it! I think it was a lot of fun to put some serious thought into what makes each brand special. As a makeup lover and consumer, I think it’s important to take a critical look at what different brands are bringing to the table.

Please share your thoughts! Also let me know of ANY product you’d like more information on –I’m happy to provide a thorough review!

Thanks for Reading!

REVIEW: Saturday Skin Spotlight Brightening Sheet Mask

REVIEW: Saturday Skin Spotlight Brightening Sheet Mask

Hello Everyone!

I hope y’all had a great week!

I had to get on here and share about my experience with a new mask I recently discovered. I’ve really been loving sheet masks lately; They are definitely less fussy than traditional wash off face masks and I LOVE the added hydration you get from leftover essences!

I’ve seen the brand Saturday Skin on social media and on several different retailers’ websites, so I became really curious to try something from the line. The brand was started in South Korea, where all the skincare magic is happening, so I was so eager to try something out from the line!

I’ve always struggled with dullness/tiredness in my complexion. No matter how much I hydrate or exfoliate, I haven’t found a lot of skincare products that immediately provide me with a natural radiance or glow.

After reading several “glowing” (pun intended) reviews on the Spotlight Sheet Masks, I decided to give it a whirl.

Some highlighted ingredients that claim to “reveal natural radiance” and revitalize dull/tired complexions:

  • bilberry
  • licorice
  • lotus extract

It is FREE OF: Parabens, sulfates, and added fragrance & dyes. The brand is also vegan.

The suggested use is pretty straight-forward: you remove from the packaging by carefully unfolding the mask, smooth to conform to your face, and allow to set for 20 minutes.

My first impression of the mask is that it is quite a bit more thick than other sheet masks I’ve tried. It seemed very unique to me, as the “fabric” is much more durable than others. It doesn’t have the paper thin feeling that you might accidentally rip it that other sheet masks tend to have. I would describe the feeling of the material as mesh like— it has the feeling of a more thin, breathable medical gauze.

*I took photos of the mask AFTER I finished using it below — hopefully you can tell it is a super durable material, with 2 separate layers. I think this design helps to allow the mask absorb and deposit the serum into the skin.

The mask itself was completely saturated in the essence, but it wasn’t dripping or running down my neck as I applied it. It easily stayed in place once I had it smoothed out — I was able to walk around the house without it sliding or falling off my skin. (Of course UPS dropped off a package when I had it on! ;-/). It really didn’t have a detectable scent and the leftover serum in the pouch was clear and gel-like.

I kept the mask on the full 20 minutes, and I didn’t ever have any stinging or issues with irritation. (I’ve been dealing with sensitivity issues since starting a prescription retinol, so I was very pleasantly surprised).

It just felt SO cooling and hydrating —which I absolutely LOVE in a skincare treatment!

img_3950

After taking it off, I used the excess serum left over in the pouch and smoothed all of it onto my face and neck. This is not a required step, but I decided to use my chilled jade roller to further press the product in for maximal absorption

SO much relaxation for a weekday afternoon!

I really, really enjoyed this mask, and I feel like it did plump up my skin and just overall revitalize my complexion. It feels like one of those gentle skincare products that you see benefit from pretty quickly without over stripping or drying out my skin. I’ll definitely keep this in my skincare rotation, especially for special events or times when I need an extra radiance and glow! It’s also just an amazing pick-me-up after a long, stressful day. Such a nice product!

*Here’s my before/after photos, taken about 1 hour apart:

So what do y’all think? Do you see any improvement or is the before/after about the same? Please share your thoughts below!

Also, please comment your favorite sheet masks!

*Again, you can purchase the masks in a 5-count pack for $30.00 HERE

Thank you SO much!

Luxury Dupe Series: Revolution Beauty Bake & Blot Powders

Luxury Dupe Series: Revolution Beauty Bake & Blot Powders

Hey everyone!!

Today’s post will be the first in a series discussing new affordable makeup finds that could be considered “dupes” to high end, luxury brands.

I should say that I don’t love the term “dupes”. That word feels very limiting to me.

As a textbook perfectionist over-analyzer, that word just makes everything seem so black and white- it feels like I’m suggesting that two products are exactly alike with no grey area. I would never want to mislead or make anybody feel that I’m putting out disingenuous information.

I feel more comfortable in saying that upon application, these products perform and create a very SIMILAR effect compared to more expensive items.

Regardless, these products really impressed me and I couldn’t wait to share them! For simplicity and all-intensive purposes in this series, I’ll just refer to these as “dupes” instead of “very similar performing-products.”

I decided to split up the products into different posts to make sure each had an equal amount of detail and discussion, without overloading y’all with a long-winded novel!

Without further ado, let’s get to the first DUPE…

Luxury Item:

Marc Jacobs #Instamarc Light Filtering Contour Powder in “Mirage Filter 40” — $49.00

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_dbeUNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_dbd

The “Dupe”:

Revolution Beauty— Bake & Blot Powder in “Banana” — $8.00

EcQDkDSkRPKi+XwQuLz6sw_thumb_db8k0M+igdqRp6Y2j8KU%2sBQ_thumb_db9

I picked up the Revolution Beauty powder kind of on a whim, I had seen it online/stores and something about it really intrigued me. Everything that I’ve tried from this brand so far has been great quality and completely exceeded my expectations. I do like to reach for a banana powder when I want an added level of brightness to my under eye area, center of forehead, etc.. I’ve loved the Marc Jacobs palette for awhile, it mattifies and brightens beautifully! It is my go-to product for touch-ups throughout the day as well. The consistency of the powder is silky and it just feels overall luxe.

  • The Revolution Beauty powder is super similar in texture to the MJ, it feels smooth and lightweight in application and has a very obvious blurring effect. I do think the Revolution one is slightly less matte than the MJ, which is more beneficial to my dry skin. It blurs pores and I haven’t had issues with it settling in my fine lines! I also love that it almost has a pearlescent quality to it in light, but it doesn’t look shimmery or glittery. That being said, I do still think it is a versatile powder and would work for a lot of skin types and textures.
  • I’m really LOVING this one so far, and you really can’t beat the awesome price ($8.00)!
  • It’s also available in 10 (!!) different shades, so I think many skin tones can find a nice match. SO GOOD!

Swatches:

IMAGE 2019-04-16 13:57:26

I also did a side-by-side wear test (about 7-8 hours total) to compare the 2 powders

  • I applied both powders the same, with 2 different clean Beauty Blenders
  • I didn’t feel that either one had superior staying power over the other

This photo was taken about 45 min-1hr after first applying

As you see it on the screen: Marc Jacobs is on your left & Revolution is to your right.

IMAGE 2019-04-16 17:57:21

What do y’all think? Does any side look better/worse/the same??

Has anyone tried the Revolution Bake & Blot powders or anything else from the brand??Please share your comments/thoughts below!

*You can pick up the Revolution Bake & Blot Powders HERE

I’ll be back soon with more dupe-tastic discussion! 🙂

Thank you so much for stopping by!

SPRING Makeup Inspiration

SPRING Makeup Inspiration

Hey everybody!

Last Saturday, I was casually scrolling through my Instagram feed when I found this STUNNING makeup look posted on Smashbox Cosmetics’ UK account.

IMAGE 2019-04-14 13:46:25

Every element of the look just spoke to me and I had to stop and admire how gorgeously fresh and bright it is for Spring. I’m not sure if its the combination of colors, the mix of tones, or the perfect balance between bold and soft glam that just really makes the perfect statement for me.

I just LOVE this look and it inspired me to look through my collection to see if I could pull something similar together. I’ll chat about the key products used to create my look:

All products linked in each product description section!

Here’s what I ended up using:

Foundation:

1-to-1 Mixture of NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Liquid Foundation & NARS Sheer Glow Foundation

  • I wanted a full-coverage base to look hydrated but not overly glowy [these two are my HG combination for a perfect makeup day!]

nC%l1dGzTQ6ULysr6BlZmA_thumb_d0b.jpg

Setting Powder:

To create that bright and fresh under eye the model has, I pulled out my Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder. I LOVE this powder to visibly brighten dark areas, with a smooth/semi-matte finish. It NEVER gets cakey or overly dry on me!

Blush/Bronze/Highlight:

Blush: In order to keep the emphasis on the eyes and lips, I decided to reach for a more subtle blush that still looks great in photos, so for this I decided to use the shade “Dallas” from Benefit Cosmetics. This is such an interesting product to me— it looks pretty unassuming in the pan, but takes on such a gorgeous and unique color once applied. LOVE!

Bronze: I don’t really see where they applied a very heavy, defined contour on her. It looks more like they used a matte bronzer to give the cheekbones a little bit more of a “pop”. For this, I used the Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Baked Powder  in the hollows of my cheek, along my hairline, and my neck/jawline. This is probably my favorite bronzer of life…….its just so freakin good.

luYHexljQyusLXOG4Ws+vA_thumb_cf9

Highlight: You can really tell where they focused her highlight, mainly on the high points of the face. It looks like a more glow-from-within type of product was used for this, so I decided  to use my beloved Dandelion Twinkle Powder Highlighter from Benefit Cosmetics (this one from Essence Cosmetics would also give a similar effect!).

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_d05.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_d04.jpg

Eyeshadow:

This was the most fun group of products to get together! The combination of her hazel eye color and the shades the artist used just mesmerize me. This look would be especially gorgeous on brown/green eyes. Her crease is pretty defined with a warm reddish-brown tone, so I knew right away what the perfect product for this was: The ABH Modern Renaissance Palette .

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_d16.jpg

This is the photo of the palette looking shiny and new from Amazon.com.

  • It is definitely a better representation than my photo of the boldness and beauty this palette has!

WGeqW21bSsyTzmiwTobLZQ_thumb_d0e

Shades Used:

  • Mix of “Raw Sienna” and “Burnt Orange” shades in the crease with a fluffy brush–this creates the perfect “not too warm, not too cool” transition shade
  • I took the same shades on a more defined, dense eyeshadow brush to deepen and darken the crease area for further definition.
  • Next (with a light hand), I took the shade “Red Ochre” with a defined crease brush for the slight pop of red she has.
    • Take your time to slowly build the color up, this shade is VERY pigmented.
  • Then, I went back to “Raw Sienna” on a fluffy blush and softly blended away any harsh lines.
  • For the brow bone highlight, I used “Tempera” for the perfect addition of brightness — this is one of my favorite shades of all time to lift and brighten the eye!

As you can see in this photo, my palette is VERY well loved. (It has been dreary and cloudy outside, so the lighting in all my photos is pretty terrible–sorry about that!)

hBak%OR3QdSN19wthAT0pw_thumb_cfd.jpg

*For that GORGEOUS purple shade she has on the lid, I used my Laura Mercier Caviar Eyeshadow Stick in “Plum”. For more control, I applied with my fingertip and patted it on my lids until I reached the desired color intensity.

Finally, To sheer out any harsh lines between the lid and crease area, I then went back in with a fluffy blush with “Raw Sienna” from ABH to complete the shadow!

Eye-Liner:

It looks like she has her top eyelid tightlined with a matte black liner, and possibly a very thin line just above her lash line. To achieve this look, I used this pencil liner from Sephora in “black lace”.

Her bottom inner eye area looks very open and bright, so I decided to add in this Wet n Wild Brow Highlighter to mimic her a wide-eyed look. (This is basically an 8-hour night of sleep in a pencil!)

%M6qt14jQuGf9bp5vXY9ng_thumb_d07.jpg

Mascara:

I don’t think the model has any false lashes on, and mascara appears to have only been applied to her top lashes. I used THIS mascara (my FAV of all time) to give my lashes volume and length.

Lips

This was the trickiest part of the look to re-create. I’m still not 100% happy with how the lip combo turned out, but my lipstick collection is mostly neutral. I would consider her lip color shade to be a true fuchsia, so I had to pull out my pharmacist hat to do some mixing and investigating to DIY it! It was difficult to find a combo that wasn’t too purplish/vampy, or too soft of a pink.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_d15.jpg

I’m sure a single lip product similar to the one in the photo already exists–please send me suggestions if you know of something closer! I think it might be Smashbox Cosmetics Always on Matte Lipstick in “Throwback Jam”

Here’s the products I ended up using:

The Kaja Cushy Vibe High Pigment Lip Stain in “Cashmere” .

This is such a COOL product-it has a soft whipped consistency and the pigmentation is unreal!

dJP0yh8vTU6mU6EKHCcUew_thumb_d00

Next…..I topped it off with this NARS Velvet Lipglide in “Rapture”. If you’ve never tried this line of lippies from NARS, you should! The formula is like an ultra-pigmented lip gloss that is SO comfortable to wear. It’s a very unique consistency!

Zifek+hmRRqasAed9DKqLQ_thumb_d01

Here’s the swatches separately and then mixed together— I really sheered out the Kaja product and applied it in thin layers to lighten it.

hfUF6D5rQZueP+2QyrWycA_thumb_d0a.jpg

Here’s the final look I came up with!

I’m definitely not a pro MUA or model like in the photo, but this was SO FUN!

I think that’s the beauty of makeup and the entire creative process; you can find something that excites you and sparks inspiration, then add in personal touches to make something of your very own.

FAVORITE Stick Foundations

FAVORITE Stick Foundations

Happy Monday Y’all!!

I feel like stick foundations are definitely having a major “moment” in my life. I wanted to hop on here and list out my favorite ones. I like to reach for a stick product when I want to pull a really pretty makeup look together fast and get out the door. Something about the stick formulas just agree with my skin and tend to work best for me. The easy and effortless blend-ability of these formulas can literally blur and perfect the look of the skin in seconds. Each one has little nuances that make it great in a unique way.

***I should also add that all these foundations (except this ONE) are MOST ideal for dry, normal, and combo skin types.

All products are linked with each product description and again below!

Let’s Discuss……..

MAKE UP FOR EVER — Ultra HD Invisible Cover Stick Foundation

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I don’t even know how I can adequately explain how good this foundation is. It’s my first foundation stick love and has a special place in my makeup-loving heart!

When I take a break from using this and come back to it, I have to ask myself why I would use anything else? Of all the stick products, this one probably makes my skin look best. It’s “HD” and designed for photography/being on camera, and there’s a reason for that. It just perfects and smooths my complexion unlike any other.

The coverage is full but doesn’t look heavy— I’d wear this everyday. The finish is gorgeously skin-like and natural. It does get more radiant throughout the day on me, but not in a way that looks greasy or overly oily. It sits on the skin like an absolute DREAM! I like to use a foundation brush for maximum coverage and minimal product loss. This is just one that has to be seen to be believed.

  • It retails for $43.00 USD for 0.44oz\12.5g of product
  • Cost is approx. $3.44 per gram.

This one is SO worth the splurge!

HOURGLASS— Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick

O9H8b7ibTlWYxYJ7e7KJvA_thumb_ce6

Of all the foundations mentioned in this post, this one is the most VERSATILE for ALL skin types (dry, oily, normal, combo). This guy packs some serious pigmentation, and it doesn’t take much product to get SUPER FULL coverage. With my dry/normal skin, I don’t have to set this with any kind of powder and it lasts all day.

This effect this one gives off is sort of hard to describe. For me, the finish isn’t dewy/radiant or “skin like”, but I wouldn’t classify it as matte either. It is just a true natural finish that doesn’t budge all day. All foundations discussed today (and my foundation collection as a whole) tend to get more radiant and glowy throughout the day, but this is one of the few exceptions. It blends seamlessly (as the name suggests) and provides crazy coverage that feels ultra-lightweight.

This foundation is IDEAL for special events or more glam makeup days– it photographs beautifully. Because it can withstand more oil or moisture-filled conditions, this is one of my favorite summer foundations. It is the perfect middle ground finish and looks absolutely gorgeous no matter what!

I also love the triangle bullet it comes in— you can be super precise on application for sculpting/contouring.

dNx8%i8wRYGGFv6tI1LZ5g_thumb_cb1

The packaging just screams luxury to me— it’s one of those products you want to stop and admire on your vanity. HOURGLASS knows how to put out game-changing products, and this is no exception.

This beauty retails for $46.00 HERE

BareMinerals — Complexion Rescue Hydrating Foundation Stick

Cdje8jlQS+CeEtq3zeaSVA_thumb_cb7.jpg

This is another dry-skinned person’s dream! The consistency is very creamy, but it has a unique gel-like feel that provides a cooling-sensation when first applied. I’ve raved about this product in a previous blog HERE, so I won’t ramble on it again too much–But WOW is it such a great foundation!

The coverage is more on the medium side for me, but it just smooths the skin and makes the complexion look freshly hydrated! This is a great foundation for day-to-day and creates a radiant “no makeup-makeup” look.

The packaging is also very luxe; it comes in a gorgeous gold tube and has a magnetic clasp to seal the formula from drying out.

  • It retails for $32.00 USD for 10g of product and is available for purchase HERE

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I really LOVE this one and I’ll definitely keep it stocked in my collection. I’ll repurchase a darker shade soon for summer!

Makeup Revolution –Fast Base Stick Foundation

This is the most recent addition to my collection and it completely blew me away!

%Jtb8rmITru6hZzP6YUQTA_thumb_cb4.jpg

The formula is rich and creamy, and it glides right on to create a gorgeous second-skin finish. The application is seamless with a foundation brush—you can create a fresh, full coverage look in seconds. It’s one of those foundations where you look in the mirror at the end of the day and feel so pleasantly surprised at how good your skin looks.

Makeup Revolution puts out great formulas on SO many different products for crazy-affordable prices! The fact that this super high-quality product only costs $9.00 astounds me. In my opinion, this gem has outperformed tons of high-end foundations that have similar claims.

If you’ve been wanting to check this one out, DO IT!

The MakeupDrop: Better than a Beauty Blender?

The MakeupDrop: Better than a Beauty Blender?

Hey y’all!

I am SO excited to chat about the newest beauty sponge I’ve tried out:

The MakeupDrop Hybrid!

Sl3bLdcYR8SVjaJucBF73w_thumb_c62

I am a super-fan of using sponges for makeup application and I love putting them to the “test” to see how they perform. I use a sponge for it all— foundation, concealer, liquid blush/bronzer, applying setting powder, etc.. Each sponge I try seems to have its own unique pros/cons, and its interesting to see what new feature different brands come up with.

I think that many people would agree that the Beauty Blender set the stage for the hype of makeup sponges—it’s the “standard” for what all new releases are compared to. I have a pretty good collection of different brand’s products, and I must say the Beauty Blender is a special experience. It offers a softness and bouncy-ness that just hasn’t been identically replicated yet. I would have to imagine that because a Beauty Blender is the OG sponge on the block, they will never lower the price. Because I have found SO many affordable sponges that work really well for me, I haven’t bought a new BB in awhile. If I’m going to spend over $20 at Sephora, I’d rather pick up a new lip product or something that I can use more than a few months.

Don’t get it twisted though— I still love me a brand new, bright pink Beauty Blender (I just wish they were cheaper!)

***I’ll list pricing of each sponge mentioned below, but I think it is first important to know that the Beauty Blender and MakeupDrop Hybrid both retail for the same price —- $20 USD.

Naturally when I found this MakeupDrop Hybrid sponge/silicone thing, I HAD to order one and see how it stacked up to the competition.

The design of this sponge is unique– it is designed to be a 2-in-1 tool, with a silicone top and a sponge base for blending. The addition of the silicone is intended to avoid product loss that would otherwise be soaked into the sponge. The suggested use of the MakeupDrop is to apply the product (liquid or cream) directly to the silicone side and “dab or sculpt” the makeup into the skin. Finally, you use the sponge portion to blend your makeup in for an “airbrush finish.”

LXD+Ki%HSLeNzjZv+Wm7gw_thumb_c68

*Notice the silicone part separates itself out of the sponge portion to minimize product loss. I must say, I love the overall design of the BeautyDrop. It’s a beautiful blue color that really POPS and the brand logo on the back is a really cool touch.

Here’s a Comparison of the BB vs. MakeupDrop DRY

*****I must apologize in advance— all of my sponges are clean but most have makeup stains I just can’t get out. So not lovely to showcase.

IYaOYHlSRei8OrWaU7YWQw_thumb_c66

As you can see here, the sponges are pretty similar in size/shape when dry. A big factor that sets the two apart, is the TEXTURE of the sponge. As I mentioned above, the BB is softer and more bouncy than the MakeupDrop both wet and dry. If you feel that the softness level is the most important factor in a sponge, the BB definitely wins.

Because the two sponges are the exact same price, my expectations were pretty high for the MakeupDrop.

In my opinion, what really sets the two apart is that each sponge has unique pros/cons depending on your application method.

PROS/CONS Each

  • MakeupDrop Hybrid
    • PROS:
      • I did feel it required much LESS product to build to the same coverage I would get with a BB. The product goes directly from the silicone to your face.
      • More precise application— because the MUDrop has more defined edges, you can really control the location/amount of product you want to add.
    • CONS:
      • The texture is less soft/bouncy than the BB
      • Concealer application is not ideal—the very defined/less spongy edges of the MUDrop made it more difficult to blend product near the inner conner of the eye.
  • Beauty Blender
    • PROS:
      • Soft, bouncy, and more comfortable to use.
      • Superior for blending out concealer
    • CONS:
      • Absorbs product easier, which results in product loss/waste.
      • Less precision in application.

Because I’m a nerd, here’s all of the other brand name sponges I have for further comparison: (Again, clean sponges with stubborn stains). I LOVE and recommend all the affordable sponges as well. They each have little unique details I enjoy. I thought the dark pink sponge on the far right was a L’Oreal sponge I love (and can’t find), but it is actually another Real Techniques!

Sponges are dampened here, and you can see that the bottom of the MakeupDrop definitely becomes more dense when wet. I should say that although it does swell up a good bit, the exterior material of the sponge gets extremely soft. Of all the sponges pictured below, the MUDrop definitely wins in terms of smoothest outer surface.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Here’s a more direct comparison of the BB/MUDrop when dampened: (Yes the MakeupDrop has a DROP of water….the irony isn’t lost on me ;-))

I think that the takeaway here is that each sponge has different qualities that make them great. I really appreciate the innovation that the MUDrop offers. To be competitive in today’s makeup market, you really have to bring something “new” to the table to keep consumers’ interests. I think this product is fun and definitely mixes up my normal makeup routine, I’ll keep experimenting with different formulas and products to see this sponge’s full range of use. If you want to spend $20 on a cool new makeup tool, I would say give this one a go!

Is this product a “DUPE” for the Beauty Blender, I would say no. But then again, I don’t feel like it’s trying to be! 😉

My EASY + AFFORDABLE Haircare Routine

My EASY + AFFORDABLE Haircare Routine

Hey everybody!

I’ve recently started a new job, which has led to some changes in my daily makeup/beauty routine. I don’t really have the luxury of spending too much time getting ready each morning, so I’ve definitely worked toward simplifying things to get myself up and out the door in a pinch.

I should say that when it comes to my hair, I’ve always tried to keep it simple. This is the complete opposite of my approach to makeup/skincare, I could devote hours experimenting with products and trying new techniques. For my hair, not so much.

I’m pretty impatient with it and I’d be happy to clip it up or wear a cute ponytail any day of the week. With that being said, I also don’t like spending too much money on my haircare. I typically keep all my hair products affordable and I almost exclusively purchase them at Walgreens, Target, Amazon, etc..

To be as clear and concise as possible, I’ll first outline the steps of my routine:

  1. Shampoo about 2-3 per week (I typically do not use conditioner)
    • I use a dry shampoo in between washes
  2. Spray in a detangler/leave in conditioner while still wet
  3. Brush out with a Wet Brush
  4. Use my Revlon 1-Step to Dry/Style
  5. Use favorite hair accessories to complete the look

For reference: My hair is straight (sometimes frizzy) and more on the dry, fine side. I have it cut to about my collar bone.

***All products are linked in the paragraphs below!

Here’s my haircare product picks to keep things quick & simple:

Shampoo:

As I mentioned above, my hair is overall dry and I have a sensitive scalp. I wash my hair about 2-3 times per week— I find it easier to style and build body this way. I opt to skip conditioner most washes, because I don’t like my hair feeling weighed down or product building up. I reach for shampoos that feel more lightweight and cleanse without over drying. Over the last 6-12 months, I often end up switching between this Head and Shoulders one (I LOVE) and this one by The Honest Company.

IMAGE 2019-04-09 15:17:40

Yes, The Honest Company one is technically baby shampoo! I was having issues with skin allergies and this is the only shampoo I could find that didn’t break me out or cause any irritation. I use the lavender one and it is gentle and very lightly scented.

***This is super random, but this shampoo is also AH-MAZING at cleaning my beauty sponges. It makes the process ultra quick and effective!

Try this one out if you’re a sensitive skin type of guy/gal!

Dry Shampoo:

Oh dry shampoo, how I love thee.

Is there a national dry shampoo appreciation day?

…….No?

There should be!

I love this stuff. I keep it with me always. Literally, I keep some in my car! You never know, right?? I honestly haven’t been perfectly loyal to one dry shampoo over the years, I do like to try different ones every now and then.

My most important dry shampoo criteria are:

  • It can’t have a weird smell
  • It can’t turn my hair gray/white
  • It can’t have a powdery finish (I want it to feel like a volumizing spray — I don’t need that much oil absorption)

Because I do tend to go through dry shampoos pretty quickly, I really try to purchase ones that are affordable (less than $10). The only exception to this is one by the brand amika. Their Perk Up Dry Shampoo is worth the extra splurge, and gives my hair an unbelievable amount of body and texture. It smells fresh and clean and doesn’t leave a white cast in my dark hair—-this one is just crazy good! (TIP: I’ve also seen amika products at clearance retailers, such as TJ Maxx or Marshall’s).

IMAGE 2019-04-09 15:18:57

My current AFFORDABLE dry shampoo favs:

  • Herbal Essences Bio:Renew Cucumber & Green Tea Dry Shampoo:   NEW FAV
    • This one is my favorite as far as the scent goes! It smells SO fresh and clean. I really feel like this one gives my hair a freshly cleansed look and feel. It isn’t the most volumizing formula for me, but its great to lightly re-vitalize my hair day-to-day without a heavy, weighed down feel. This line also contains aloe as an ingredient, which helps to calm my scalp without any irritation. Really love this product!!
    • IMAGE 2019-04-09 15:20:01
  • Pantene Pro-V Dry Shampoo   OLD FAV
    • This product has a lot of negative reviews, mostly having to do with the nozzle getting clogged up. I’ve never had this problem, and I have consistently re-purchased this dry shampoo the most often. It works the longest throughout the day for me, and doesn’t take much product to make my hair feel super fresh. It’s kind of my go-to dry shampoo when I want something I can rely on to “wake my hair” up and get on with the day. It has sort of a nostalgic hair spray-ish scent to it, which fades quickly and doesn’t smell bad to me. I don’t have issues with this dry shampoo caking up or discoloring my hair either. It just feels like a familiar favorite that never lets me down and I’ll always keep on hand.
    • IMAGE 2019-04-09 15:20:28

Detanglers/Leave in Conditioner:

Most of the time, I skip conditioner in the shower and use a de-tangler or leave in conditioner instead. For me, this method keeps my hair feeling light and enables me to retain and build some body. It’s also way easier to style when it hasn’t been weighed down by a heavy, cream-based conditioner. Typically, I’ll spray my hair down immediately after showering and leave my hair untouched until I’ve finished my makeup for the day. My go-to affordable product that I’ve used for as long as I can remember is the Aussie Leave-In Conditioner. This doesn’t take much product to soften and smooth my hair right away, and I love the sweet scent!

Although it is a little bit more pricy, I ADORE the UNITE 7 Seconds Detangler Leave-In Conditioner. This one was a recommendation from my hair stylist. It is more expensive on the front end, but a single bottle will last me forever. A little definitely goes a long way!

IMAGE 2019-04-09 15:21:04

The Wet Brush

Once the conditioner has “marinated” for a little bit, I reach for my beloved Wet Brush to comb everything out. I don’t know what kind of magic is in the bristles, but it works wonders at removing tangles while your hair is still wet. I’m in the process of recovering from significant hair loss from one of my prescription meds I used to take, so this brush is a savior at helping me maintain my hair strength and preventing breakage. It’s also just a great brush for day-to-day use on dry hair and makes smoothing your hair completely effortless. It is comfortable to use, it doesn’t poke or feel sharp and stab-y to your scalp. If you are tender-headed, have extensions, or just have hair that is harder to manage, this is a MUST HAVE in your hair care routine. Plus, it comes in so many pretty designs and colors. LOVE!!!

Drying My Hair:

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer

I should first say that this is not the most affordable product on my list. HOWEVER, it was worth every single dime I paid and has made my life SO much easier. I purchased this about a year ago and rave about it any chance that I can. It’s simply a HERO beauty product.

IMAGE 2019-04-09 15:21:55.jpg

There are so many potential uses for this dryer and it makes my life so easy! First of all, I no longer need to flat-iron my hair. For as long as I can remember, I would blow dry my hair AND straighten it with my flat-iron to help tame the frizz. This obviously took up more time and caused SO much heat damage. My hair got really prone to breakage, loss, and just lacked overall shine.

What I love about this thing is that it dries my hair and makes it look smooth/sleek, yet gives that “va-va-voom” factor if I need to add some body to it. If I’m in a hurry, I just brush and dry with no real regard to my layers. If I’m feeling more fancy and want a more blown-out look, I’ll layer my hair in small sections to dry it. Either way, it dries my hair fast I’m super happy with the final result. It just simplifies my routine like none other! I use these clips to section my hair off to dry it and clip it out of face for makeup application.

IMAGE 2019-04-09 15:22:19.jpg

LIFE. CHANGING.

[Side Note: My hair is not very thick, so if you have to flat-iron after using this— that is perfectly fine! I just don’t have the need/want for any additional steps.)

It comes with 2 heat settings and a cool air setting. In between washes, I will use dry shampoo to create a little bit more style to my hair using one of the lower settings. Its also great for just freshening up and removing sweat and oil if you can’t shower after working out

Trust me y’all—-you need this in your life! Check it out HERE

Accessorize!

There’s no way I can talk about my hair without a shout-out to my favorite ponytail holders. I got these as a Christmas stocking-stuffer one year, and my life was forever changed.

At first glance, they look like an old-school telephone cord and I always get questions about what’s going on in my hair. Not only are these a real-conversation starter, they will truly give you the best ponytails of your life!

Behold: the Kitsch Spiral Hair Tie

I do have pretty thin hair, so finding a ponytail that doesn’t slide out of place and actually HOLDS my hair is rare to find. These things can create a perky pony that doesn’t fall out of place all day! They’re also great because it doesn’t take out some of your hair with it each time you remove it or cause the dreaded crease if you want to wear your hair down later. I love these for little top knots or just wearing in a tight or loose bun style. They are super versatile for styling without damage and I end up wearing these at some point every single day.

I promise your hair will thank you!!

All of these different product combos + techniques keep my hair routine pretty minimal and simplistic. I don’t like to stress about my hair, and it leaves time for me to have a little bit more fun with my makeup. The less fussy, the better!

Since I started washing my hair less often and reducing its amount of heat exposure, I’ve noticed how much more healthy my hair looks and feels. More specifically, my hair is less prone to damage and getting a lot of split ends.

I really hope y’all enjoyed this wordy post and got a little insight on how to simplify your own routine. Please share your own thoughts, approaches, and favorite products below!

Also, I am super curious: are you a hair minimalist or  a “more-is-more” kind of person??

3-in-1 Makeup?!?

3-in-1 Makeup?!?

HAPPY WEEKEND EVERYONE!

There’s nothing better than getting sucked into an Amazon.com marathon shopping session. I’ve spent hours on end searching for random makeup products, skincare, clothes, shoes. etc.! I’m not sure how I ever lived without this website.

Having said this, I’ve ended up purchasing a lot of random products, especially beauty-related ones. Being the blush-loving human that I am, I stumbled upon these 3-in-1 Lip + Cheek palettes from UNDONE BEAUTY that claims to “Blush, Highlight, and Tint” with customizable “sheer-to-opaque color.” Naturally, I was curious.

I took a closer look at the UNDONE brand, and found a ton of makeup products they offer with the same concept of customizing your own depth of color/coverage. I found the brand as a whole to be super interesting, their goal is aimed at creating problem-solving products for everyday use at an affordable price point. I also really appreciated the fact that they use “natural” ingredients which are vegan and cruelty free.

Each of the Palettes retail for $7.00 USD each on Amazon.com HERE

Of the 3 shades available, I decided to purchase the blush in the colors — “Berry”  and “Blazen”. Here’s how these unique little palettes are laid out:

IMAGE 2019-03-28 18:18:52.jpg

  • “Blazen” (described as a sunny coral with warm undertones) is pictured to the left
  • “Berry” (described as a rich raspberry with blue undertones) is on the right

Hopefully, you can tell that the palette is sectioned out in 3 “layers”. Each layer has a different formulation, with a suggested use based on the amount of pigmentation it provides.

  • The Top Layer is the most sheer — use for lips and dewy* touches
  • The Middle Layer is considered medium coverage- for lips and cheeks
  • The Bottom layer is described as intense — use for lips, liner, and “long-lasting blush”

*The dewy finish is claimed to be from the ingredient of coconut extract

Side Note: I REALLY loved the sleek, minimal packaging these guys arrived in– cute little holographic pouches!

0Rf%EnXFQV+xDE964IUfzg_thumb_975.jpg

I didn’t waste much time to swatch these out and see if they lived up to the claims….

This swatch goes from L to R: top section, middle section, and bottom section. I built up each swatch with 2 layers.

Here’s the Photo and Swatch of “Berry”

IMAGE 2019-03-28 18:54:20

Swatch of “Berry” — from L to R: Bottom Section, Middle Section, Top Section

IMAGE 2019-03-28 18:55:24

As I was going through to swatch each “section”, it was really cool to notice the marked texture difference in each. The most sheer layer was a little bit more stiff and had more limited blend-ability, the bottom (high coverage section) was very emollient feeling and deposited color effortlessly. The “slip” of each section increased as the coverage went up. Playing with these was honestly so much fun and surprising to see how much of a difference each formulation change made. I can definitely see the glow and radiance that the blushes provide.

In terms of application, I found it easiest to apply the product to my hand to first warm it up, then use a dense stipple brush to pat and blend in. Like my normal makeup application routine, I find it easiest to apply my bronzer first, then add in this product for blush.  I like to apply a generous layer of the middle section as a base color, then add color to the apples of my cheeks with the bottom section. SO GORGEOUS!

Lip Application:

As I might have mentioned earlier, with each step up of color intensity the formula gets more opaque and matte. It’s super easy to apply these to the lips; I usually go in with the most intense layer and apply with a fingertip. To add a gloss-like finish, I’ll add some of the top layer for a shiny look. Overall, these feel like a very nourishing lip balm that doesn’t emphasize texture or fine lines on the lips.

The most fun thing about these products and the UNDONE brand, is that you can play around with the different finishes/colors to create YOUR own custom look. I’ve layered both colors together on my cheeks/lips at the same time and created some really beautiful looks. For more precision, you can also use a lip brush to apply the product and smooth or blur the outer edges for a perfected look.

*Check out my FAVORITE lip detailer brush in this set. Such a game-changer!

Overall, I just think this brand has some of the most unique and innovative products I’ve used in a while. I love that you can just play with and layer the different formulations to create your own look. I’m super impressed with the quality of the product for such an affordable price tag, and I think this is just a fun addition to your collection!

I just ordered the concealer product from this line, and the highest coverage formulation is claimed to cover TATTOOS! I can’t wait to play with it.

I’ll keep y’all posted!!

So what do y’all think, is this a brand you might want to check out? If you have some of the UNDONE products, reply below and share your thoughts! I love this little new brand discovery so far!

Thanks for stopping by!

REVIEW: Drunk Elephant Slaai Makeup-Melting Butter Cleanser

REVIEW: Drunk Elephant Slaai Makeup-Melting Butter Cleanser

Hey everyone!

I came to chat about my latest impulse purchase from Drunk Elephant, The Slaai Makeup-Melting Butter Cleanser. I saw it on DE’s Instagram and knew I wouldn’t be able to pass this one up.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_a7a

I bought mine online for $34 USD from Sephora. (I am pretty sure the Drunk Elephant website ships to more international locations than Sephora)

I love a cleanser that takes off all my face/eye makeup easily, without having to do 1000 extra steps to clean up leftover product. Considering the claims and high quality Drunk Elephant always tends to have, I had pretty high expectations for this one.

Just a few quick specs on it:

  • Its a rich oil, balm formula that claims to melt all dirt, makeup, & sunscreen off (even water-resistant formulas)
  • DE recommends for normal, dry, combo, and oily skin types
  • A few key ingredients are non-fragranced fruit extracts (blueberry, kiwi, and strawberry) and fruit oils (cranberry seed oil, acai fruit oil, watermelon seed oil) for moisture
  • It also comes with a small tube of Bamboo Booster— a mix of bamboo and charcoal powder to help exfoliate away built-up dead, dry skin.
    • This is an optional step recommended to use 1-2x/week along with the balm. (Due to excess irritation, DE doesn’t really recommend using the booster with retinols. I’m on an RX retinol, so I decided to skip this step for now).

*Here’s a photo of the Bamboo Booster that comes with the cleanser (not sure if they are planning on selling this separately or not?). It’s a small little 3gm sample tube.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Suggested Use:

  • Apply to dry skin, and massage the product in with dry fingertips
  • Add water to activate, rinse with warm water, and pat dry OR remove with a soft, damp cloth

**I used this with a full face of makeup on as directed, and rinsed with warm water.

The first thing I immediately LOVED about this product was the packaging. I do really like several other balm cleansers that come in a jar, but contamination is always an issue if you dip into it with makeup-covered hands.  DE solved this problem brilliantly, by providing a little scoop that has a magnet to attach perfectly on top of the container. SO CLEVER!

Here’s a photo of the magnetic scoop that comes with the cleanser:

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_a7e

Random Q: Am I the only one that LOVES how each product in the DE line has its own individual color? Just such a fun little detail I really appreciate! 💚💚

On my first use of this, I think I used about scoop and a half, which was probably a little too much. You really don’t need much product to cover your whole face with a thin layer. I love how you can just rinse it off with water—some products with this consistency require you to use some type of cloth to actually pull the product off your skin.

didn’t have any issues with burning or sensitivity in my eye area. It will cause a little bit of blurriness if it gets in your eyes; if you’re a contact lens wearer like me –you might want to remove your contacts before using this. The balm is also completely odorless, so you don’t have to worry about it being over-fragranced.

When I washed it off, I was genuinely shocked at how SOFT my face felt right away. It did basically remove all makeup on my face, including mascara and eyeliner.  My skin felt super clean, but not stripped or that overly “tight” feeling. It truly felt like a cleanser/moisturizer all in one step. I didn’t feel the need to go in with another cleanser or micellar water, but I did use my favorite toner on a cotton round.

I’ve used this product about 3 or 4 times total, and so far I am so so happy with it. It just works SO well and truly melts everything off. I would compare the effectiveness to the Clinique Take the Day Off Balm, which I also love; but this one really provides a higher level of moisture and noticeable smoothness to my skin. Because the effects of this cleanser aren’t really “dewy” or radiant, I think this would work on all skin types. It just provides so much nourishment and softness.

I just LOVE this product so much. As of now, it’s a game changer for my skincare routine and really exceeded my expectations. I’ll definitely keep using it and update on any more long-term effects seen from it.

Drunk Elephant, I love you! UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_a72

Has anyone bought this or is planning on picking it up? Please tell me ALL your thoughts about it!!

Thanks so much,

Jena

WANDERLUST Eyeshadow Palette

Hey everyone!

I checked the mail today and found a literal rainbow waiting for me—the Wanderlust Palette by Profusion Cosmetics!

I couldn’t wait to get it unboxed and get behind the camera. I resisted my urge to swatch it right away, and managed to get a few photos.

For now, I’ll just share my first impressions and include photos of swatches. I will definitely spend a little time playing with it to provide a more thorough review. I was just too excited not to share! 🌈🌈

She is definitely a beauty!

This 21-pan palette is available at a very affordable price of $10.00 USD. It also comes with a brush that seems like it could be pretty promising.

I have to say, my eyes were immediately drawn to this section of the palette. Something about that green and brown! 💚

Now, let’s swatch!

First Row:

Shades are listed and shown in left to right. The first photo was taken with no flash, the second with flash.

Shades:

  • Illusion
  • Tranquil
  • Chill
  • Serious
  • Frosting
  • Gravity
  • Love Story

If I’m being honest, the top row was pretty underwhelming. Many of the shades were gritty in texture and were pretty difficult to build up pigmentation. A number of shimmer shadows had more glitter than I usually like, so I would plan to experience some fall out and use a tacky primer before applying these. Despite a few disappointments, the shades “Chill” and “Love Story” did look more pretty in person and just didn’t photograph very well.

Second Row:

Shades shown and listed from L to R:

  • Majesty
  • Hypnotic
  • Jade
  • Stormy
  • Splash
  • Regal
  • Nimbus

Photos of Second Row:  No Flash (top), With Flash (bottom)

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_96aUNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_969

The second row is where the magic really starts to happen. I really love the green shades here and those blue shades are SUPER vibrant. It might take some courage to play with the brighter colors, but they are beautiful shades.

Third Row:

Shades Listed and Shown from L to R:

  • Coast
  • Statement
  • Nostalgia
  • Cruise
  • Enigma
  • Retro
  • Go Girl

IMAGE 2019-03-28 15:29:42IMAGE 2019-03-28 15:29:50

I really appreciate the different shades of brown in this row— its a good mix of warm and cooler-tones. This gives a great variety of transition shades for different skin tones and can correspond well with whatever look you want to achieve. It might be worth pointing out here that there’s no black shadow— I know many people like having that as an option for a more well-rounded palette. The blues in this row are bold and beautiful, the pigmentation for these are apparent right away and I love the shades chosen. Although they are bright, something about them seems a little bit more wearable than other blues I’ve seen in colorful palettes. I also love the unique jewel-toned hue that “Cruise” puts off. The “Go Girl” shade is probably my favorite color in the palette and gives me all the pink Barbie vibes!

Based on first impressions, I think this is palette is really pretty and I can’t wait to see it live in action. I will definitely put some time and effort into seeing how these shadows perform in application and provide details on my final thoughts. As mentioned earlier, it is a very affordable option for the quality and shade/texture variety. Most importantly, it inspires me to step out of my neutral box and play with some color!

Some Spring Strobin’ and Glowin’

Some Spring Strobin’ and Glowin’

Happy Thursday, Y’all!

I’ve spoken about my personal favorite spring lip trends HERE. In the spirit of the new season, I’m really loving things that can work to create a glowy, soft-focused brightening effect to the skin. I think that adding in a few key products will give your complexion a little pearlescent pick-me-up! All links are included in each product description*

Note: Some of the photos might have flash. The softness of these products made photography difficult to show the full dimension and glow when used on the face.

Highlights/Strobing Products:

bareMinerals Loose Highlighting Powder in “Clear Radiance”

If you’re on the hunt for products that give a soft, ethereal look to the skin….you’ll love this powder. I’m all about the glow-from-within look and this product delivers exactly that.  The powder is soft and finely milled, which sits on the skin to create a beautiful sheen.  It doesn’t emphasize pores or texture, so it would also look great on aging skin. If I wanted to wear highlight for work or an interview, this is my main go-to. I like to apply this to the high-points of my cheeks, my brow bones, and the tip of my nose if I’m feeling a little more fancy. The “Clear Radiance” shade has a pinkish undertone with a perfect subtle hint of soft, pearly glow. So much gorgeousness! Oh bareMinerals, how I love thee!

Swatch of Clear Radiance: (I had to take this one with flash—I couldn’t get a photo to show the pearly dimension of the powder. It definitely performs best on the face!)

Benefit Cosmetics — Dandelion Twinkle Powder Highlighter

This highlighter is also a gorgeous option for creating a soft, natural sheen. It also has a subtle pink tone to it with a pearlescent luminosity. I feel that this highlight can be built up a little bit more than the bareMinerals one, especially if you use a more dense highlighter brush. It just has such a great formula with a soft consistency to create an effortless glow. I highly recommend this one! (It can be purchased full-size for $30 USD or mini $16 USD)

**Also, if you’re craving that highlight but want to avoid the more luminous finish, I absolutely LOVE Benefit’s Dandelion Shy Beam Liquid. It has that gorgeous pinky-nude shade to it, but with a MATTE finish in a liquid form. It’s super easy to work with and I apply it by tapping it in lightly with my fingertips or using a damp sponge. It is such a unique formula and I especially love to use it to highlight my brow bones for a fresh, bright-eyed effect. I’ve also used it as an under eye brightener for my dark circles as well!

Swatch of Dandelion Shy Beam Liquid (to the top and left) and Dandelion Twinkle Powder (to the bottom and right)

MAC Cosmetics — Strobe Cream in the shade “Pinklight”

I love this product for so many different reasons—-its such an awesome multitasker and can be used in several different ways. First you can use it as a moisturizer/primer, the cream is very moisturizing and gives the skin a brightened, plumped look. I especially love using it like this on days when my skin looks dull and needs a little radiance added to it. (Bonus: it has a subtle scent of fresh laundry!). It can also just be worn alone on no-makeup days for lit-from-within glow, applied to specific areas in a sheer layer, or concentrated areas to highlight after face makeup is applied.  If the pink tones aren’t really your cup of tea, there’s an additional 4 shades to choose from (I want the peach one next).

I put a good amount of the Mac Strobe Cream on my hand in the photo below to see the sheen in action:

wcgUwVKGTee2f4R%r5WxcQ_thumb_87d

Essence Cosmetics —“Be My Highlight” shade

Ahhh this highlight is SO unbelievably good and affordable (less than $5.00 USD). I was genuinely shocked when I finally got to see this little gem in action. It comes as a little dome-shaped compact, but transforms into the most silky, butter-like powder. It sits on the skin beautifully and gives the most angel-like luminosity. I would say that of the products mention in this post, this product has a more light champagne tone to it. For medium to deep skin tones, the sister product to this is the “Sunlighter” shade. Also gorgeous and I will reach for this one out quite a bit as well. Because the formula is so smooth and seamless, I will multitask these as an eyeshadow or to give dry areas on my skin a very light dusting with a large powder brush. (When used sparingly, this effect is somewhat similar to the Hourglass finishing powders or the new Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Glow Powder).

*Other Honorable Mentions:

Too Faced Chocolate Bar Eyeshadow Palette- Use the Shade “Champagne Truffle”

I am definitely not suggesting you purchase an entire palette for 1 shadow, but if you happen to have this palette on hand—experiment with using the large panned pinkish shade “Champagne Truffle” as your highlight. It gives off a beautiful pearly sheen to the skin to help achieve that ethereal glow. [That being said, this is a FABULOUS palette for creating just about any eye look with its wonderfully neutral shade range. If you’re on the fence about purchasing –DO IT. It’s SO good.]

I just love a good multitasking product!

Worth the Splurge: Hourglass Cosmetics Ambient Lightning Powder – “Luminous Light”

I’ll keep this one short and sweet due to the price:

This strobing powder is definitely more luxe and high end. It’s a gorgeous formula that blurs yet brightens the skin in such an indescribable way. It just a stunner and it would probably be my product of choice on aging skin. (Available in Regular and Mini Size HERE)

Swatch of Luminous Light:

So these are my favorite pink/pearl highlights that really give that natural glow! I have highlights in my collection that are a little bit more bold and bright for special occasions, but I tend to reach for the more subtle ones day-to-day. Let me know if you want a separate post on these!

You glow, girl!

Some Single Eyeshadow Love

Some Single Eyeshadow Love

Hey Everyone!

I recently discovered the brand Sydney Grace from a few influencers on YouTube, Instagram, etc.. I was really impressed by the reviews and I love supporting smaller brands, so of course I had to see what all the fuss was about. Not fully knowing what to expect, I ordered 3 of the pressed pigment shadows.

SO. MUCH. BEAUTY.

I immediately started snapping photos. The delivery arrived super quick, and was thoughtfully packaged in a sweet little box. Then of course, I had to get to swatching!

The pressed pigment shadows come individually as 1.8g/0.064 oz of product and retail for $6.00 USD each.

img_2834

Initially, I was amazed by the smooth, buttery texture of the shadows. They swatched effortlessly and seem to glide right on my skin with an almost cream-like finish. So beautiful! The pigmentation is rich with great color payoff —the shades I have almost seem to morph into multiple tones in different types of lighting. So complex and duotone-y! It wasn’t easy narrowing down which ones to purchase, but finally I decided to buy the shades “Hot Stuff”, “Blushed”, and “Peace”

Swatches in natural sunlight:   Left to Right — “Hot Stuff”, “Blushed, “Peace”

Swatches in darker light with flash:

Individual Swatches:

Hot Stuff” —I especially love the unique olive/brown/red complexity of this one.

img_2838-1

“Blushing” — Rose-gold/light copper perfection.

img_2839

Peace” —A delicious purple/mauve taupe.

So far, I am absolutely in LOVE with these shadows and how great they perform. I think they are at a very affordable price point for the outstanding quality and pigmentation. I can’t wait to play with these a little more and create some fun looks!

As I mentioned, I love supporting lesser known brands, and I hope Sydney Grace gains more attention for all the fantastic products. If you haven’t yet, I highly recommend y’all check this company out and see what you think! They also have other product varieties -(cream shadows, loose glitter, matte shadows, blush, highlights, etc.), I definitely want to try out more!

Has anyone purchased anything from this brand yet? Please share your thoughts!

Major Beauty Product Nostalgia

Major Beauty Product Nostalgia

Nostalgic Makeup

Nostalgia is such a weird thing; at the same time, you can feel a little happy and a little sad. Reflecting back on another time in your life can help you appreciate where you’ve been and understand where you are now. (Too deep? Sorry.)

I’ve always had such a fascination with makeup. As a kid, I can remember being at my grandmother’s house and going through endless drawers of beauty products. She had all kinds of free gifts from department store makeup counters or old lipsticks and blushes she insisted were “too bright” so I should take it. I would have the time of my life swatching things and being so excited to go home and add it into my polka-dotted makeup caboodle.

Still to this day, I find my 28-year old self feeling giddy to go to Sephora, Ulta, or the makeup aisle at the grocery store. I love looking back and thinking about a few products that really sparked my love of beauty and helped define my personal makeup style.

Let’s Go Down Memory Lane….

NARS Blush in “Orgasm”

This is probably an old favorite for many people and not the most original choice, but boy do I love this gem. I can remember first starting to wear it in high-school. I was embarrassed to say the shade name “Orgasm” to my mom, so when I needed to re-purchase one I would just say that I needed more “NARS”. The peachy pink shade of this blush is just timeless—it looks great on everyone and pulls together just about any look. I would load this stuff up on this old scratchy brush I had and go to town with the application. I literally think this is the only blush I wore daily throughout my high school and college years and there’s no telling how many times I’ve repurchased it. I can remember frequently scraping the last few bits of powder out of the pan so that none would go to waste. Still to this day, I’ve got a regular size compact of it and a travel size as a back-up. I love my “NARS” so much!

Revlon Illuminance Cream Eyeshadow

I don’t know why I was so drawn to these cream shadows, probably because I wasn’t good with eye makeup brushes and I could just dab this stuff on with my fingertips. I remember sitting in front of my bedroom window with a small mirror in natural light and thinking this was the best makeup product money could buy. It had such a luminosity to it I’d never seen in eyeshadow powders, so I felt like some kind of 16-year old makeup guru patting it all over my lids. I loved the rose gold/warm tones and would use this little pallet in all sorts of ways. When I bought the Metals one (pictured to the right), with a few darker shades, I felt like the edgiest girl in school (I wasn’t).

Too Faced Pink Leopard Blushing Bronzer

I can distinctly remember walking around Sephora and spotting this compact on the display shelf. I thought it was the most unique, beautiful product that I had ever seen. Of course, I begged my mom to get it for me and the rest is history. I don’t think I understood at the time what a “bronzer” was or how to correctly apply it. Was this a blush? Was it a bronzer? I didn’t know but I would take my single very old brush and dust this stuff carelessly all over my cheeks and forehead. I probably re-purchased this 4 or 5 times, mostly due to it getting broken or lost. I’m still a sucker for leopard and I would buy it again if ever re-released in a heartbeat.

Britney Spears’ Perfume

One of the highlights of my life at the time (and probably now) was in 2000 when I saw Britney Spears live in concert. I was a super fan and loved everything about her. Naturally, when she started releasing fragrances I would have to buy them all. First came Curious, then there was Fantasy. For years around the time of their release, it was always understood I would be needing a new bottle for my birthday or Christmas. I proudly displayed and admired the bottles on my bathroom vanity or a shelf in my bedroom. I would douse on her perfumes anytime I left the house, there was no such thing as “too much”—-I practically bathed in the stuff. My mom always joked she knew I was getting ready to go somewhere when the smell of my perfume made its way all the way downstairs from my room upstairs. When I smell these scents to this day, I feel instantly nostalgic and thankful.

I have to say,  this was probably one of my favorite topics to put together so far! It’s so fun to look back and think about how much you loved something or how happy it made you feel; I would encourage y’all to do the same. With the constant release and availability of new products, it is so easy to forget about the things you loved first.

As we get all the new let’s not forget to appreciate the old, shall we?

So what beauty products make you feel nostalgic? Is there anything you want to re-purchase? Let’s chat about it!

xo,

Jena

My Favorite Skin-Like Foundations

My Favorite Skin-Like Foundations

Hey everyone!

As I mentioned in my previous blog HERE , I have a bit of a foundation obsession right now. Some of these I’ve loved for awhile and others are a newer discovery for me.

All of these foundations, in my opinion, provide an almost undetectable “your skin but better” effect. They all have a natural radiant finish and range from medium to full coverage. Any of these options would be great for everyday wear—they are all super lightweight and comfortable formulas.

***If you have normal/dry/combo skin—this is the list for you!

All product links are included below!

I’ll just hit the main points for each—if y’all would like a more thorough review, I’ll be happy to post!

Here’s my picks (In no particular order):

bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Hydrating Foundation Stick— SPF 25

I CANNOT say enough good things about this foundation. Here’s a few specks for it:

  • Comes as 0.35oz/10gm stick for $32 USD
  • 20 shades available in the range with SPF 25
  • I find that the stick packaging is very sleek and compact (great for travel). It also has a magnetic closure to make sure product seals & doesn’t dry out
  • Blends effortlessly –I recommend using a brush for the most coverage

Y’all this foundation is gorgeous. It is the most weightless, comfortable formula and makes the skin look naturally hydrated and supple. It has more of a natural/radiant finish and builds up to a full medium coverage. It doesn’t emphasize my lines/wrinkles or build up on textured areas. As you apply this foundation, it has a gel-like cooling effect that almost feels like a skincare product. I didn’t expect this at all, but I think this one secured a spot into my top 5 all-time favorite foundations. Beautiful, beautiful stuff and I highly recommend for normal or dry skin! A++

**Check this foundation out HERE

  • Has SPF 18
  • Claims to achieve a naturally luminous and radiant finish (I agree)
  • Comes in glass bottle (no pump) with 1oz of product
  • Very affordable —(less than $6 USD) and available at a variety of retailers (Walgreens, Target, Amazon, Walmart, etc.)
  • I find it to be a very comfortable and lightweight formula

I have no idea where I’ve been these last few years, but I am just now trying this foundation and it is absolutely stunning. It definitely lives up to the claim of providing a super SMOOTH finish—it glides over the texture I have and doesn’t emphasize any dry patches or fine lines. The skin looks hydrated and perfected with no cakey or mask-like look. I think it looks great applied with a foundation or damp sponge and blends seamlessly. I usually do set it under my eyes and lightly all over my face with a light-weight powder to extend the wear time. Really, really love this one!!

IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC + Illumination Cream

  • Full coverage with SPF 50
  • Provides a radiant finish
  • Comes in a 1oz tube with a pump (I LOVE the packaging)
  • Also comes in the Original CC cream (more of a natural finish) and Matte formula (I have not tried this one)

This line claims to be a CC cream (it does color correct), but performs more like a full coverage foundation. I’ve loved and used the Original CC Cream for a while –highly recommend that one too! I was super curious when they expanded the product line for a while, so I had to break down and pick up the illumination one. I love this stuff for so many reasons! One of the best features about it is that it literally has it all in one step—it can serve as your primer, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Its just so easy and low-maintenance! This is the only foundation/CC cream that I apply with my fingers and it sets up beautifully. I can’t say this foundation will take you from early morning to night without a little fade, but it touches up great and can be refreshed with a hydrating spray or touch of powder. This one is just SO good!

Face atelier Ultra Foundation

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my latest foundation love from Face atelier. I won’t rave too much about it–I did a full 2-day wear test HERE . This gem just blew me away. It truly has a skin-like finish and looks like a radiant dream. I love the dewy finish, but I would use a little setting powder in the T-zone for longevity in wear . I think it would look great on aging skin and doesn’t emphasize any uneven or textured areas. Try this one out, y’all!

Swatches Below: Some shades match better than others 😂😂

Swatches from Left to Right: bare Minerals Stick (Cashew); IT Cosmetics +Illumination (Medium Tan); Maybelline Dewy +Smooth (210 Sandy Beige); Face atelier (Shade 5)

So that’s my “foundation that doesn’t look like foundation” roundup. I’m super curious if anyone has tried these or is planning to? Also, let me know if you have any other must-have foundations!

Have a great weekend!!

REVIEW: OLEHENRIKSEN Banana Bright Face Primer

REVIEW: OLEHENRIKSEN Banana Bright Face Primer

Happy Hump Day!!

I hope everyone is having a GREAT week!

I finally picked up the OLEHENRIKSEN Banana Bright Primer I’ve had my eye on the last few weeks!!

I was immediately drawn to this product when I first saw it being advertised. Something about the idea of banana skincare and the word bright just calls to me! I started to see mostly positive reviews start to roll in for this product, so I couldn’t wait any longer to get my hands on it!

I really didn’t know if the “banana” aspect of the product meant it was infused with actual banana or if it has a banana-like tone seen in some powder products. I did a little research and found that it had a few other ingredients that surprised me:

  • Vitamin C: To target visible signs of aging
  • Banana Powder- Inspired Pigments: To instantly illuminate
  • Vitamin E: To nourish and condition the skin –also helps to stabilize the Vitamin C in the formula

The basic claims of the product are to “illuminate to deliver instant radiance while improving and extending makeup wear”. Also, it is suggested to “blur imperfections and hydrate” for DRY, NORMAL, COMBO, and OILY skin types. OLEHENRICKSEN is also vegan and cruelty free.

  • It retails for $36 USD for 1oz/30 mL of product

Now, let’s get to the formula itself!

I resisted the urge to immediately apply it all over my face, and wanted to first get a close look and feel for the formulation.

Here’s a little pea-sized amount of product, you can definitely see that it is banana-toned cream.

1dTkOFrMS+Wk8eaPQpQ%dw_mini_c2d

The cream feels very lightweight. It has more of a cream moisturizer-like quality to it, as opposed to several of my other radiant or luminous primers such as the Becca Backlight Primer or the Laura Mercier Radiance Primer, which feel more gel-like.

It does have a hydrating feel initially, but it does set up within a few minutes. For normal skin, I think this could serve as a moisturizer/primer in one product. Oily skin may need the addition of a mattifying product in the T-zone. For dry-skin people like myself, I found it looked best with using my normal moisturizer.

To my surprise, the scent was a fresh, citrusy-orange smell. I guess I was expecting banana-scented? Either way, it smells really nice and light and reminds you that you’re getting a dose of vitamin C!

Swatches:

Swatch on my forearm in more dim light (a very shadowy area in my bathroom) with no flash. I was able to get a little bit more natural light in the second photo.

Photo WITH Flash:

CAEf1IozStq27OdCfy39Vw_thumb_c28

Hopefully you can see the luminance and subtle sheen that the pigments really give off. For the swatches, the product was applied pretty concentrated to one area of my arm, so you could see the difference in my nearby skin.  When it is applied on the face more sheered out, you really see an overall instant brightened effect. It does not look shimmery or glittery on my face. I didn’t feel like it discolored my skin in anyway, and the time to “set” or “dry down” wasn’t too long– maybe 2-3 minutes.

I think the real strength of the product is that it does visibly brighten your complexion instantly without looking oily/greasy. It blended great with my other makeup–I was wearing a more radiant foundation with it (Make Up For Ever Foundation Stick), and it didn’t break it down faster or look oily throughout the day.  I think that in this instance, it did live up to the claim of extending makeup wear. I wouldn’t say that it completely blurred any texture/pores on my skin (I still felt the need to apply a light dusting of setting powder), but the brightness it provides helps eliminate darkness and dull areas significantly. It didn’t emphasize my fine lines/wrinkles which is a huge plus!

Overall, I REALLY think this is a great primer. I think it is pretty versatile and can be made to work for a variety of skin types. It also looks beautiful and somewhat glowy when worn alone for a no-makeup-makeup-look. For foundations that are overly matte, this would be a great addition to mix in to create a more natural finish.

I’ll continue to experiment with a variety of foundations, but so far I’m quite impressed! I think it is definitely worth trying out!
