Vol.1: Beauty Claim-Buster!🤓

Hi Friends!

I thought it would be a fun and (unique?) series to start on my site. I want to feature some of my new-ish products in my collection and review them strictly by answering the product claims from the Brand themselves.

These can be products that I love, those that I really like, or feel kind of “meh” about, and even products that decide to move forward to candidates “with more experienced skill sets” than me.

Job Hunting Probs, amirite?

Think of the product claims as a sort of benefit “checklist”, and we can see how my experience coincides. I’ll also add in notes on things that I noticed that were really horrific or really awesome that may not have been mentioned. Overall, I’ll try to keep this concise and informative!

Keep in mind, these are my experiences. I’m not a perfect “test subject” and product claims are often purposefully vague. The claim that a cleanser can “Improve the look of skin…” is broad and open-ended, and ultimately left to the user to determine if the change is seen or not. I think there’s also a psychological component to the cosmetic industry, kind of like, “Hey, wait, this cleanser really did improve the look of my skin come to think of it!”

See what I’m saying?

The sometimes fuzzy language seen on cosmetic labeling has more to do with the lack of FDA oversight more than anything (here in the USA, anyways!).

*Takes off Pharmacist hat*

**For the purposes of this post, I’ll list each claim. Then my response as a True or False statement. Remember, the statement isn’t truly “true” or “false”, I’m just explaining my experiences with each benefit the brand is suggesting can be seen with the product

Ciate London Watermelon Burst Hydrating Primer

The Claim: “A lightweight, multitasking primer to hydrate, brighten, and improve skin’s texture—all while prepping for long-lasting makeup. Featuring watermelon extract droplets that activate upon contact to quench and energize the skin, the silky cooling pink base actively brightens, while refining pores and texture.”

from http://www.sephora.com

T or F? Mostly all TRUE! Hydration and brightening effect were seen right away–my face felt very plump and had a very healthy look to it, it also looked brightened from the slightly dewy look of the primer (not oily/wet).

As for improving my skin’s texture…….I can’t say I’m confident it does. It may help minimize some pores around the center of my face/near my nose during the wear, but not enough to confidently agree with this claim. I don’t know what the brand was implying but, just in case–I certainly can’t see any long term benefits so far from using this product in terms of “texture improvement”.

The Claim: Delicately watermelon scented, this unique aqua serum primer grips foundation for long-wear and that just-applied glow”

From http://www.sephora.com

T or F? True—but just one thing- The consistency of the primer is definitely water-based. Ciate uses the word “serum” to imply that it is more of a thin consistency, I personally would have used gel. I don’t know if that even matters, but I felt it was worth saying.

  • It does “grip” foundation— I’m thinking of the Milk Hydro Grip foundation, but the Ciate is not as intensely sticky as the Milk one. This one does leave you with some degree of tackiness, but not nearly as much as Milk and I find the staying power also superior.
  • just applied glow” —this is absolutely true. I would almost describe this as a comfortable softening, gloss-like look to the skin. I can/have worn without makeup and I have also used it as a daytime moisturizer- it super refreshing and a nice pick-me-up to start the day.
  • And yes, it is absolutely true that this primer smells like watermelon heaven— if you’re a watermelon lover like myself, prepare to be a fan.🍉🍉

So with these features, I won’t draw any final conclusions. This is simply me, as a consumer, sharing my thoughts and opinions with another consumer. I think it’s interesting for you to read over my reactions to the claims, and think about what YOUR thoughts are. Do you think the claims were sufficiently met? Do you think the product had enough claims? Were they too vague, too specific, etc.? If you’ve used it, what was your experience?

I love when we, as a beauty community, can continue to challenge and engage each other. Rather than creating posts like “here’s the product, I used it, I loved it..”, (which I still have and will post,—no shade or judgement!!!), I want to more purposefully try to TALK about the products.

So please, SHARE!! 😉

FYI: This Primer Retails for $28.00 USD for 40mL/1.35oz product at Sephora

New Skincare Favorites

New Skincare Favorites

Hi Friends!

I’ve been on a skincare kick lately. While my skin is definitely enjoying the new purchases, my wallet is a little concerned….

Anyhow, I have a few new products that are really upping my skincare game and I just wanted to post a quick round-up of what I’m loving!

All products linked below!

Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask

I know, I know. I fell deep into social media’s trap of “Instagram-made-me-buy-it” with this one (Shameless Plug: follow me on IG if you aren’t already @jj_beautyblog).

IMAGE 2019-06-12 09:20:05.jpg

Something about the simple, yet eye-catching packaging just sucked me right in. That being said, there’s really something amazing about this product. It is said to hydrate and soothe “stressed skin” with a nourishing mix of vitamins, ceramides, antioxidants, and gentle exfoliating extracts. According to Summer Fridays, you can apply a thick layer clean/dry skin for 10 minutes and remove any excess after (no-rinse required). I personally prefer to use it as a makeup primer/moisturizer or a sleeping mask. I use a little bit more than a pea sized amount and it really preps my skin to be soft + smooth. I just really love it this mask and I find it to be the perfect amount of nourishment for AM or PM use.

Dry/Combo skin sufferers rejoice!

Glow Recipe Watermelon Sleeping Mask

IMAGE 2019-06-12 09:20:20.jpg

Ugh. I hate how much I love this stuff. It is heavily watermelon-scented in the best possible way, and I can’t put this on and not feel instantly amazing. Because the ingredients are naturally-derived and separation occurs, you have to mix it up with each use and the texture is what I would describe as “gloopy”. The key ingredients in this formula are watermelon and hyaluronic acid (HA)— a match made in dry-skin heaven.

I put this on before bed and wake up the next day with the softest, most moisturized skin I’ve probably ever had. This is a BOLD statement, but, you kind of need this in your life and the hype is REAL.

Honest Beauty Elevated Hydration Mist

IMAGE 2019-06-12 09:20:30

If I am being completely honest, I absolutely did NOT need another facial mist, but here we are.

This mist is intended to be an ultra dose of deep hydration for the skin in the AM/PM or throughout the day. Once again, this product has my favorite ingredient at the moment HA. Aloe Vera is a star ingredient as well and really helps soothe sensitive or dehydrated skin.

The scent of the mist is sort of botanical-like, probably related to the aloe in it—  definitely not my favorite scent (THIS one is) and the mister is a little weaker than I would prefer. That being said,  I love how super hydrated I feel after spritzing this on. I think this one is also great for summertime and oily skin because it doesn’t have a dewy or “wet” effect— it simply just absorbs right in and plumps the look of skin. Really enjoying this so far!

I am curious to know what skincare y’all are loving at the moment? Does the change in seasons drastically change your beauty routine? Comment below!!

Thank you so much

REVIEW: Purlisse Watermelon Energizing Sheet Mask

REVIEW: Purlisse Watermelon Energizing Sheet Mask

Happy Weekend, Friends!

There’s nothing quite like discovering a good skincare product you can’t wait to tell all your pals about! I’ve mentioned before that I really enjoy trying out different kinds of sheet masks; I find them an easy and effective way to give my skin a little hydration and radiance.

A big trend in the beauty world at the moment is watermelon-scented products. I love it, I’m here for it, and I am trying out as much as I can (watermelon-themed post coming in the VERY near future).

I found the Purlisse Watermelon Sheet Masks as I normally do, perusing Amazon.com.

Dyn0RnrIRoqRiiSqQ0mS+A_thumb_139b

If you aren’t familiar with the brand Purlisse, The CEO/Creator is Jennifer Yen (she’s gorgeous), and she was inspired by her grandmother to create a skincare line that embraced her Asian heritage. Purlisse is also cruelty-free.

As I mentioned, I picked up a box of 6 masks for around $18.00. You can also purchase a single mask for around $5.00.

The Watermelon Energizing Sheet Mask is a natural fiber material infused with watermelon, aloe vera, and cucumber. These ingredients work together to fight free radicals, as well as soothe and nourish the skin.

  • Watermelon: locks in moisture
  • Aloe Vera: reduces inflammation
  • Cucumber: soothes skin

I have been doing these masks in the morning, as they are very hydrating and leave my skin with a subtle glowy radiance. I think that this mask is a great way to start the day or as an afternoon pick-me-up. The masks are undeniably very watermelon-scented. You can definitely smell it the entire time the mask is on, but it does dissipate after removing the mask. I happen to LOVE watermelon-scented things- I find the smell very revitalizing and instantly mood-lifting!

The directions are to unfold the mask, wear for 15-20 minutes, and not to rinse it off after. I have left the mask on for longer than 20 minutes, and it didn’t irritate or sting my skin at all.

I have found this mask to have the perfect amount of moisture to it. It isn’t dripping in essence and running down your neck, but you are left with leftover serum to pat into the skin. The formula is slightly tacky for awhile, but it does eventually dry down and plays well with other skincare/makeup. The material of the mask isn’t overly delicate to the point where you might rip it while unfolding. It feels very durable and fits well on my face.

I’ve used 4 of the 6 masks, and I must say that I really LOVE these. They just leave the skin with instant brightness and hydration, while being SO gentle! I plan to use up the box and repurchase again to keep in my mask rotation.

Highly recommend these if you complexion is suffering from dullness, dehydration, and just needs a little boost of radiance!

REVIEW: GLOW RECIPE Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser

REVIEW: GLOW RECIPE Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser

Hey Friends!

Whew. It has been a minute since I’ve posted on here. I hope some of y’all can relate to going in and out of “creativity” mode. I think I’m especially prone to this when it comes to writing, I definitely have to be in a certain mind set to sit down and clearly articulate my thoughts in words. I fully plan to get back into consistently posting 3-4 times/week!

Anyhow,  I’ll spare you further wordy-ness and jump into the review!

I had a little single-use sample size of the GLOW RECIPE Blueberry Bounce Cleanser, and I was definitely eager to give it a try! It can be used a few different ways: a general cleanser, a makeup remover, and as a mask. I was drawn to trying it out as a mask, as I have several different cleansers/MU removers in my rotation that I love and use regularly.

Review as a Mask:

To use as a mask, GLOW RECIPE suggests to apply to clean, dry skin and simply rinse off with water after 5 minutes. I really love the simple, no-fuss ease of using the product this way— it’s not a mask that requires you to leave it on for 20+ minutes and then clean up a ton of residue on your skin. It leaves my skin SO super smooth and soft, and I don’t find it to be too terribly drying/stripping to my skin. The smell is beyonddd! It is my favorite kind of scent—super fresh and fruity

I really loved the results from masking with the sample size, so I decided to pick up the little $10.00 mini (30mL/1oz) size for a little further investigation (without the investment of the full-size for $34.00).

Review as a General (Makeup-Free) Cleanser:

The consistency of this cleanser is a full-on gel. It isn’t watery or runny in the least, but it does have a lightweight feel on the skin.

Close up to note the texture/consistency of the gel:

IMAGE 2019-06-02 09:43:35

As the cleanser comes in contact with water on your face, it does begin to foam up. I really feel like the aim of this product is to clarify and really cleanse. it isn’t one of those cleansers that you feel iffy after using– it is super effective and you won’t be left wondering if your skin is really “clean”. That being said, I think this product would probably best suit normal, combo, or oily skin. If you are very dry, I think you may want to consider something more nourishing. As we get more into summer, this one is working well for me, as my skin is leaning a little bit more normal and much less dry!

Review as a Makeup Remover:

If I am being totally honest, I haven’t done a ton of testing on this for makeup removal. I did use it once or twice, and I felt the need to take an additional cleansing step to remove excess makeup. My favorite cleanser/makeup removing product is by far the Slaai Balm from Drunk Elephant— it’s just SO hard to beat that one! That being said, I don’t think this one is best utilized for makeup removal for me.

I really enjoy using this one as a quick little 5-minute mask and as an AM cleanser. It is super cleansing and refreshing, and I think it is really great for oil/dirt removal during these very hot summertime days in the South. I think y’all might enjoy this as long as you aren’t dealing with excessive dryness. As I mentioned above, you can get the mini one to try out before committing to the full-size (a little does go a LONG way!). The fruity scent is deliciously refreshing, and I LOVE starting out the day with the little pick-me-up it gives.

Hi everyone!

I didn’t plan on posting today.

I don’t have any makeup reviews or new products to rave about, BUT recent changes in my life have led me to reflect on the importance of empowering yourself to empower others; more specifically the importance of women empowering women.

I’ve been forced to make some stressful career decisions that have put me in a place of uncertainty and extreme self-doubt at times. Over the last year and a half, my family and I have been in the slow process of healing from a devastating loss of a son and a brother. Through these ups and downs, I made the decision to take a step back and make a more conscious effort to take care of myself.

Through all the loss, tough decisions, and set-backs life has recently thrown at me, I’ve come to realize these perceived struggles have empowered me to start to become the real “me”. I won’t allow myself to be subjected to a toxic work environment. I won’t disregard the importance of my own physical and mental health.

My own fear of failure or rejection has held me back from doing so many things in my life, but now I’ve decided I can’t do that disservice to myself. Life is too short.

All this is to say, ladies…

Ask for the raise at work, go back to school, book the flight, start the blog

Whatever it is—–do it!
